Nigel Edwards, President

Nigel Edwards grew up in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from the Ohio State University in 2008 with a major in international studies and minor in Arabic language. He then went on to receive a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010. Nigel is Managing Attorney at the Law Offices of Omar Baloch, specializing in immigration law. His fluency of the Spanish language gives him the ability to provide bilingual legal services. Nigel’s immigration law practice is focused on deportation defense before the immigration courts, U Visa Petitions, BIA Appeals, family petitions, and waiver petitions at the US embassies and consulates abroad. Nigel is a founding member of the NC MBA.

Reem Subei, Vice President

Reem Subei is a Senior Staff Attorney with Muslim Advocates- a national legal advocacy and educational organization that works on the front lines of civil rights to guarantee freedom and justice for Americans of all faiths. She works on issues of religious accommodation, banking, religious discrimination, federal and police misconduct and housing and economic development. Prior to joining Muslim Advocates, Reem was a senior attorney at Advocates for Basic Legal Equality in Ohio. Her work included legislative advocacy, nonprofit governance, eviction defense, jail conditions, equity in education and Black neighborhood preservation. She has filed and defended cases in federal and state courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, as well as administrative complaints before federal and state agencies. She teaches Social Justice Law at the University of Toledo School of Law. Reem moved to the Raleigh area from Ohio at the birth of her niece in North Carolina. Now a resident of North Carolina, she enjoys the regular run to Milklab for bubble tea, walking the Lake Johnson Park trail, and a glazed donut from Baker's Dozen.

Mousa Alshanteer, Secretary

Mousa is currently an associate attorney at Brooks Pierce who specializes in healthcare, transactional, and general business matters. Mousa has advised various health care providers, including physicians, group practices, hospitals, and surgery centers, on a wide variety of transactional matters, general business matters, regulatory compliance, and litigation. Additionally, Mousa has planned, negotiated, and documented transactions of different sizes across several industries, such as mergers and acquisitions (including both purchases and sales) and private equity financing. He has also represented clients of all types and sizes in general business matters, such as entity formation and organization, internal governance, and contract drafting and negotiation. Mousa graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in May 2021 with honors. While at Carolina, Mousa served as a staff member on the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology, and secretary of the Carolina Health Law Organization. Mousa graduated from Duke University in May 2016 with Latin honors of magna cum laude and membership within the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. At Duke, Mousa served as the managing editor of The Chronicle, the independent daily newspaper at the University. His writing has been published within such publications as The Charlotte Observer, The Greensboro News and Record, The High Point Enterprise and The Raleigh News and Observer.

Hazheen Selevany, Treasurer

Hazheen Selevany is a Staff Attorney at Legal Aid of NC working in the housing division. She represents low income individuals in Wake County and Johnston County with their fair housing and eviction matters. Hazheen graduated within 3 years magna cum laude from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Arts in political science with the goal of pursuing law school. She then graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina Central University School of Law in May 2023. She joined the NC Muslim Bar Association in 2020 and has been a proud member since. In her down time, Hazheen enjoys going out for bubble tea, cooking diverse cuisines and traveling with her husband.

Akram Hauter, Law Student Representative

Akram Hauter is a 2L at Campbell University School of Law. He graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina State University, where he double majored in Political Science and Foreign Languages & Literatures. Akram spent his summer as an intern with the Honorable Judge Griffin at the North Carolina Court of Appeals. While at NC State, Akram interned with the National Council on US-Arab Relations, the US-Qatar Business Council, and the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center.
